Between 500,000 and 1,700,000 youth experience homelessness each year. Youth ages 18-24 make up 12% of the homeless population and are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. They may also be more at risk than other age groups for becoming homeless. Many factors associated with youth homelessness mirror adult homelessness -- substance abuse, mental illness, lack of education, unemployment, and poverty. Family conflict and transitioning from foster care or juvenile justice systems are also significant issues for youth who are homeless. These transitions require attention when delivering services to this age group.
