House the Homeless released a survey of homeless people who were asked a number of questions.
“Do you want to work?” Of nearly 530 people, 472 said yes. Only 48 said no.
“What is keeping you from working?” The top three responses are: health issues; can’t find work and disabled.
And “Would you work a 40-hour week if you would make enough for basic food, clothing and shelter?” An astonishing 468 said yes and only 48 said no.
This dashes to pieces the common perception often held by the working population in many urban areas. So many times, I have thought, "Why don't they just get a job." But the fact remains that much of the homeless population across America do not choose to be in the situation that they are in. Yes, some of them are addicts who are on the street because they refuse to enter a rehab program, but many of them are also on the streets due to circumstances beyond their control, such as chronic health problems without insurance, or a simple short supply of open employment positions.
