The road to addiction and destruction is wide and smooth, but the way to recovery is narrow and full of obstacles. However, collective efforts are afoot to minimize the availability of drugs. Efforts to pull out addicts out and blow a new life into them have also gathered momentum. Drug rehabilitation centers have stepped in with superior methods of dealing with drug addiction and it is very heartening to notice that many of these addicts, who would have otherwise gone to their graves as failures, have found new meaning in life due to the concerted, result oriented, and honest efforts of these centers.

Various methods are employed for different kinds of patients. The family and social background, behavioral traits, likes and dislikes and any other peculiarity of a person is analyzed before he is put through de-addiction procedures. Due to the prolonged and uncontrolled use of drugs, chemicals and other toxins generate inside the body which further increases the craving for more quantities of drugs. These toxins actually control the lifestyle of the addict.

The first step employed is detoxification. The body is freed of these unwanted substances with the help of medicines. Traditional means employed for this has often been found to be hard and painful, and many addicts get back to their previous addictive stage as cravings return.

However, rehabilitation centers employ modern means for detoxification. The rapid detoxification method is found to be successful for patients addicted to substances like heroin and opium products. The Waismann method is employed to cleanse the receptors in the addict's brain of narcotics. However, the patient needs to be kept unconscious during the treatment. The advantage is that the addict never experiences cautious withdrawal. The draw backs are that being a compulsorily physical detoxification method, it does not inquire into the root causes for addiction and does not offer any advices about how to deal with future problems. Only highly trained and experienced professionals can do it effectively and safely.

For people suffering from severe addiction, long term treatment methods like Narconon method needs to be employed. Lasting up to six months, these methods employ exercises, yoga and steam baths to remove toxins from the body instead of medicines. After detoxifying the body, efforts are undertaken to get to the root psychological cause of the problem. Psychiatric means are totally eschewed. Patients are counseled to learn from the past. They are also helped to develop the skills they lacked, due to which they fell into this quagmire, making them confident, self reliant courageous to face the world, wherever may come his way.

The advantage of this Narconon method over the waismann method is that no chemicals are administered, and in most cases, the results are everlasting. While the latter is simply physical detoxification, the former deals with mental detoxification too. While waismann method can be employed by hospitals with trained professionals, only proper drug rehabilitation centers can administer the narconon method.
